It has been a long time since I have posted on my blog. I need to take my web 2.0 class all over. This time, I will concentrate on useful (to me) apps. I want to learn to create QR codes, so I can add them to all the new library books I purchase. I'm hoping to get kids excited about them. Right now, they just ask me what the symbol is.
I have been concentrating on my displays in the library for the past couple of years, so now it is time to ramp it up. Wish I had time to add all my books from Shelfari to Jacketflap so both would be updated. Hm, maybe...
I use so many different ereaders, sometimes I forget what book is where. NetGalley can go to Bluefire or Kindle. Simon and Schuster goes to Adobe Digital Editions. Guess they could go to Bluefire if I knew how to crete them in PDF. Oh well, sometimes I read on the computer, sometimes on the iPad, sometimes on the Kindle and sometimes on my iPhone.

ALA Volunteers are AWESOME!!

ALA came to one of our district's middle schools today to help weed. This library had not been weeded in over 25 years. These 6 dynamic people arrived ready to work and attacked the shelves. It was incredible to watch these professionals at work. They came from all different parts of the U.S. to help us. We weeded over 10,000 books in 6 hours. A couple finished their section early, cleaned the shelves and staged some books on the shelves. This will lessen the "blow"the principal will feel when he sees all the books being deleted. Administrators never seem to understand the weed concept. This principal will walk into a beautiful library on Monday morning. How can we ever thank these volunteers? When they left, we thanked them over and over. They waved and said they were more than happy to do it.They even claimed to have enjoyed it. I am still in in awe of these wonderful people in our profession.
Tomorrow, off to ALA. I hope I run in to my new "friends".

There is excitement in the air. The winter session of CSLA's School Library Learning 2.0 begins today. This is important to me. The program has been a lifesaver for me. Learning all these new tools has been wonderful. I can't wait to learn more. There are so many wonderful web2 tools to discover. In the 23 things we studied, we came out with at least 60 more tools to use. I applaud this organization for being a leader and innovator of school library learning.
Web2 tools are so important to open the web to everyone. The internet opened new worlds for us, but Web2 has innovated the world. We can only imagine what is next. Things like livescribe coming out in 2008, and secondlife are tools we will all be using. Chris Duke aka Topher Zwiers, is an expert on secondlife in education. His dedication to lifelong learning is incredible.
Very interesting to see what is happening in the world of technology. I want to be a part of it.
For me, the sessions CSLA offers are perfect.

Maximum Ride Series

This past week, I have been reading the books by James Patterson, The Maximum Ride series. No wonder the kids are so excited about them. The books keep the reader engaged. The characters are just as real as my neighbors next door. Now, just like the kids, I hope he continues to write for young adults.

Tech Dept Comes Through for Us

I am happy to report our district technology department has listened to my pleas about unblocking del.icio.us. I am ecstatic. I am tagging my websites for teachers. Yesterday, I was able to have a teacher use delicious to get my saved sites for Study Skills. He will also be able to peruse other delicious sites. The Study Skills class is a new elective at our school and new to the teacher. It is tough to be assigned a new course just a few days before classes start. I was thrilled that he asked me to collaborate with him. I am really looking forward to it. My schedule is packed, but I am looking forward to the challenge. I will meet with the class at least once a week. I have posters up around school to advertise a new club. Instead of a book club where we read and discuss books, I am trying a club where we will challenge each other to get one more reader to read a favorite book. I have 3 students that are writing the syllabus for it. It sounds like so much fun. This challenge will start with 4 of us. Hopefully, by the end of the first month of school, we will have 50. Three more teachers are on board to begin October first, when we will break off into smaller groups. I sure it works as well as these kids have planned. They are very excited about it.

Amazing.
I e-mailed the director of technology yesterday(Friday)at 5:30 p.m. stating my frustration about the filter blocking del.icio.us as well as our blogs for CSLA's 23 things. This is Saturday night at 10:15, and I have a reply. It seems the County of Orange has added a new filter, at least they are testing one. I'm told there are many problems, and to be patient. He told me when it is done, he will do whatever he can to unblock the sites we will need.
He is quite impressed that 4 or 5 of use are taking these Web2 tutorials. I do believe that he will at least meet with me and most probably come through on my request at least for delicious. Now, we just need to keep bugging them to allow the rest of the tools in our schools.

Disappointment

I was so disappointed when I returned to school and discovered del.icio.us is filtered. These blogs are also blocked. I immediately e-mailed our tech department and asked them to unblock them. It is so discouraging to see the filters tightening. I am of the belief that our students need to be taught responsible use of the internet. I hate to see the use of technology squashed. Our kids can't have ipods at school either. I have stated my case over and over, but it seems to be an administration fear of backlash from parents. I know all it takes is one, but the majority suffer for it.
I was really hoping to have my del.icio.us account available. I know there are tons of bookmarking sites, and I am thinking about it but fear they will soon block those also.
So sad.

Wiki vs. Ning

I have created both a wiki and a ning to test which is better for a book review for students. I have asked friends to start posting and commenting so I can see what works best . I wish we could all use one blog and every person post so you would see everything on one page. I am sure there is something, I just have to figure it all out.

Using What I Have Learned

I created a wiki for my sister's gate class. Now, I just have to convince her that this will be awesome.
I named it Ancient Greece.
She will write a portion of a report using both correct and incorrect information.
#1. Each student will have to find and correct (using a different color font) one incorrect portion of the report. They will need to add a comment and cite thier sources.
#2.Students will draw from a hat different subjects about Ancient Greece. They will have to decide where in the report to insert their info. Of course they will need to again cite their sources. She will decide how many sources they need.
She can use this as a peer writing project and let them edit it after it is complete if she wishes.

I think this is a great idea. I am going to show it to my 6th grade language arts/social studies teachers and see if I can convince them to try it.

Thanks for this great opportunity to propel me into a lifelong learner. Web2 is so interesting. Web3 and 4, here I come. This really has been quite an experience. I am so glad I got on board.

My favorite exercise has to be online generators. My most treasured, has to be del.icio.us.

I have tagged my sites and now am tagging everyones elses. I have created blogs for my grandkids. It is a great way to keep up with them. I see their school work as they tell me about it.

I did reach my goals of viewing problems as challenges. The challenges were many. This did take many more hours than I expected. I was feeling pretty challenged mentally most of the time. Then ......satisfaction when I was able to compete the task. I know I drove my friends nuts with my enthusiasm, BUT.....there isn't another feeling as strong as satisfaction

Change this tutorial? No way! It may be helpful to include a few ideas on how each excercise can be used in the school library.

Would I sign up for more tutorials? - You bet.

Describe my learning experience in a word or sentence? Mind boggling!

Week 9 Thing #22 ebooks and audiobooks

I checked out Librivox and the Gutenberg Project. I have downloaded a book from Librivox in the past. The books aren't the ones I normally read. It did motivate me to renew my library card. My public library subscribes to CALIFA. I just checked out What Was She Thinking by Zoe Heller. I downloaded to my mp3 player. This is the first time I've done this. I can choose up to 5 books at a time. They are checked out to me for 14 days. After that, they just disappear from the mp3. Hard to believe. I can't wait to see that.
Best Places to get "free" books, looks to me like more of an advertisement. Most seem to be get 2 free after you sign up for a monthly fee. Buy 2 get 2. I may have gotten the wrong impression, but that is what I got from it.

I will however use my public library instead of purchasing them. I hadn't used the public library for years.

I just returned from vacation. I took a short road trip with my grandchildren 5 and 7 years old, and their parents. The 3 of us were in the back seat.They hate to be in the car long. After the first 10 minutes, both kids pulled out their players, put on their headphones and seemed to be in heaven listening to their books. The 5 year old was listening to Where the Wild Things Are. He was clearly getting a kick out of it. The 7 year old was listening to Freckle Juice. I put my headphones on and listened to my book. The kids' parents were probably thrilled to get to hold a quiet conversation. No fighting or bickering.

Week 9 Thing #21 Podcasts

I thought this excercise would be a no brainer done in 10 minutes. I am very familiar with podcasts. I listen to them constantly. I helped my brother-in-law create one for his algebra class and he now does them daily.

BUT..... I decided to check out a few on the recommended list. I thought Michael, a teen volunteer at Hennepin County Library, did a great job on his podcast of Guy Reads. He does audio recordings by teens for teens.

I watched a couple podcasts on second life. I am actually searching for one I saw when I first started this tutorial a month ago. It was on second life created by someone in the Texas University system, I believe. It was so good. I can't find it. I will eventually, I am sure. I must have gotten to it from a link in this tutorial somehow. I watched Machination again. I even watched a few Pottercasts. They were not done very well at all.

THEN.... I discovered Google Sketchup. I have spent 3 entire days and nights here. I watched each tutorial at least 3 -4 times. It is fascinating. I found this sketchup by Josh Wilson, of the Library of Congress (see below). It is incredible. My grandchildren are the recipients of all my experiments from this class. They love it.

I am going to add a few podcasts to my school website on research. I will try to involve the students and my new mimeoboard. Fun stuff.

Week 9 #20 YouTube

I was a bit leery about the YouTube assignment. I was watching YouTube constantly. It is like a dead brain just glaring at the screen. I think I watched every single YouTube on Web2. All the instructional ones. Then I started to watch all the ones referred on blogs. All the videos posted on Second Life would lead to more blogs that led to more YouTube. My grandson is very interested in Claymation.He has been posting on YouTube for the past 3 years.

Introducing the Book, March of the Librarians, Web2 have been on all the listservs in the past 2 months. I think posting videos and podcasts on library websites would be very helpful. I was planning on posting a few powerpoints. Maybe I will have to rethink it.

Week 8 #19 LibraryThing

My LibraryThing

I cataloged 15 of my books in LibraryThing. I thought it was easy. I really enjoyed looking at it with the tag cloud. That is very cool. It will be awesome to see when you have lots of books and tags. I put both a search widget as well as the cover and titles on to my blog. The print is big, so I will play with it and see if I can change that. It is cool that you can link to author pages. I will do that at school. I think I will just LibraryThing new additions to my book review page. I'll see what works best. I checked a couple of the sites where people linked LibraryThing to their existing catalog. I don't see the point. Maybe I just don't get it. I am amazed how it pulls the info from Amazon. You don't have to copy and paste.

I even purchased LibraryThing t-shirts from the CafePress store.

Tomorrow, I am teaching my sister to catalog her classroom library books in LibraryThing. She will have to purchase the yearly or forever subscription.

I downloaded the Mosaic Maker to my computer. When I add more books, I am going to make a poster.

I didn't like the talk feature or blog feature. Too much or just confusing.

Overall, I liked this site and will definetly use it.

Week 8 #18 Online Productivity Tools

I tried both Zoho Writer and Google Docs. Both were easy to create, save, change and post. (See both below)
I think Zoho Writer is easier and faster. I will probably use it when I need this. I can recommend this to students also. I do know some students used the Google docs last year.
Many of them had google accounts because we used G-mail to transfer student work from school to home and back.

I created this document in Zoho writer and exported to my blog. It was easy and accessible from any computer with internet. If our district doesn't get our drives available by remote, this will be very handy. I also saved some templates for later use.

Gail Giles is one of my favorite authors. I recommend this book to grades 7th and 8th graders.

Week 7 #16 Wikis, #17 Add Entry to Sandbox Wiki

#16...I created a wiki for our students to "talk" about books. I created it in Wetpaint. It was very easy. I'm so glad to have this. Students not able to come to our book clubs have asked for this. It will be fun to see what they write and what they suggest. I know some students will write often and others occasionally. I will have to come up with something good to get more kids involved. Our circulation is huge, but I don't know how many students will take part in our new wiki.

#17 ...I added 2 different ideas in the sandbox. first, I added pictures, but deleted them in favor of text. I will use book covers in the wiki I created for school.
I still prefer ning to wiki. Maybe I just need to get more acquainted with wiki.

I found a wiki created by a district tech person for the classes offered in professional development. No one has posted at all. I want to do it, but I am not sure what I would write.Maybe about my new mimeo board.

Week 6 #15 School Learning Web 2.0 Future of Libraries

I have learned so much from this 2.0 tutorial.
When viewing "Away From Icebergs", I thought, boy, this guy's (Rick Anderson) got it. We are rowing against a very strong current. The "just in case", I got that a few years ago after attending a conference by Pam Berger. I don't buy or keep anything "just in case". She is an amazing librarian and presenter ahead of her time.

"To a Temporary Place In Time", by Dr. Wendy Schultz scared the daylights out of me. I know I committed to being a lifelong learner. I know I committed to finish this tutorial, BUT....Library4.0?? Yikes. I hope I can stay committed. Surely, once I get better acquainted with the web, the easier it will be? We will see. I love how she states, Library 4.0 will not replace Libraries 1.0 through 3.0; it will absorb them.
Brilliant.

Technorati is amazing. I love tagging. I have tagged everything in my bookmarks and favorites.
I spent quite some time (way too much) searching many tags. I just shocked to see 3 hours passed while I was searching second life and virtual worlds. All the talk of Web3 kinda freaks me out. At this rate I won't have to worry about NOT being a lifelong learner. I hope I can catch up and keep up. About a month ago I saw an amazing video on second life in the universities in Texas. I didn't save it, and I cannot find it. I am bummed. I am obsessed and it is driving me crazy.
I don't see a downside of Technorati unless you consider loss of time, obssesive disorder, and sitting for hours straight a downside.
I have always searched for blogs on Technorati to read on library issues and book reviews, so I was familiar with it, just had never claimed a blog to it until now. I tried to add the cloud widget of labels, but could not figure out where to paste the url. Braindead!
I would be in heaven if School Libraries on the Net could somehow get tagged. Our school district web master would love to have all our sites tagged. Most teachers have stated they don't want to share and don't want others to be able to use their documents or ppts or podcasts. He will make it so they have a choice to share or keep private. It would be great if he could add a link to every website so the eachers could learn more about Web2. I get a little too enthusiastic and send the staff e-mails about what I am learning constantly. They always thank me, but they are probably sick of me. My principal loves it! I'm sure when this class is finished, she will make a huge deal of me knowing web2. It seems I always start each e-mail with ,"I promise this is the last e-mail about web2, but this is so cool". They just laugh. Then they want to see how it is done. I even send stuff to our tech department at the district. No one had heard of a ning. I was so proud. They are scrambling to stay ahead of me because they know I will not let up. I told them we (5 of us from our district are doing this tutorial), are going to be dangerous. We will be geekier than they are. I can't wait!

I love del.icio.us! I spent most of the evening last night as well as most of today exporting and tagging all my favorites in Internet Explorer to delicious and tagging them. Then to Mozilla Firefox to import all the delicious bookmarks. I love the tags. What an easy way to find your info fast!I am going to try this with my school files. I have folders inside folders and it is so unorganized. I still want to investigate the links in de.licio.us. I didn't see where they are, so will investigate HELP.

In Mozilla today, I discovered BlogRovr. I will check it out more when I get to Technorati. I really like Mozilla better than Internet Explorer, but I have always used IE. I think I just may switch to Mozilla all the time.

I will definetely use del.icio.us daily! AND, to think I can access it from any computer. GENIUS!!!

Week 6 (pre)Thing 13

I finally got the del.icio.us video to play on my computer. The problem was in the settings on my computer, but I really have no idea where. I just kept changing things until it worked. Now, I am so enthralled in Library Thing, Technorati, and Del.icio.us that I haven't had time to post. I have watched at least 5-6 videos on web2 that have been great. I got stuck on Joyce Valenza's blog, then realized she is the one that created LM_NET wikispaces. Everywhere I search comes up with this lady's name. Springfield Virtual Libary, again Joyce Valenza. Sometimes, I wonder where these people come from? I want her to conduct a seminar in Orange County, California so we can see her. She will probably be on second life before I even figure second life out. Web2 ,defined by wikipedia, is overtaking my life. I had to catch up with web1 in order to understand web2.

The nings I joined are now producing e-mails sent to me asking to be my friend. This is pretty weird for me as I do not know what that entails. Do I have to join certain friends to comment or ? I suppose I will accept and see what it is about.

The first thing we are supposed to do in this task is watch a 12 minute video on del.icio.us.

The link that takes us there, takes us to an error message. This blog is on hold because the bandwidth has been exceeded. Please contact your blog provider. I did e-mail the person in the Help box. I will spend a bit of time seeing if I can figure it out without the video.

Hopefully, this will be fixed soon. I can't wait to see how I can use del.icio.us both at school and home.

Finally, here is my Rollyo search. I can see how this will be useful in getting the websites organized much better. I still want to see the difference between Rollyo and Delicious. They may be nothing alike and may not even serve the same purpose. I will find that out soon.

I was not able to add the Rollyo icon to my tool bar. I do want to start using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, but will have to wait until I change change my favorites. Time is what I am always short on. Everything takes time.

Week 5 Thing # 11 Rollyo (NOT YET)

I know I should be working on Rollyo, but it intimidates me. I am wondering if
Virtual Learning Resource Center is basically the same thing? I guess tomorrow I will sit down and attempt to figure it out. Meanwhile, I am still playing on generator. I really must go back to my previous post and turn off the fireworks on my neon sign.
This LED sign below is just like the scrolling sign I have in our school library for announcements. Wait until I show the kids myvery own LED sign on my blog. They will be impressed. This LED sign was created on generator by toolator. I was trying to put this on my title bar, but just couldn't come up with a way to do it. It looks like that can handle just a picture upload.
I did join a ning, Teacher -Librarian. I even made a comment on a discussion post about this program , 23 Things. However, I am not a teacher, so I will join Library2.0 instead. I do enjoy reading all of the discussions. I subscribe to 4 listservs, Calib, Midnet,LM_NET, and YALSA. I am a devotee to all of these. There are such incredible people involved. The information they so freely give is much appreciated by me.

I finally got my name in lights. It pays off to keep playing. Now a week later, I am back to turn off or down the sound of fireworks. I found this on generator.

This is a photo I took of some books returned by a creative 8th grader. My T.A. loves the digital camera, so he took this picture before shelving the books. We have collaged two walls of a 10 x 10 reading area with his photograhs.

Play Week has been fun and frustrating. I created many posters and cards that I e-mailed to friends and family. The scissor sister's video is hilarious. Generator has so much it would be nearly impossible to see it all. I created my name in neon lights on www.notcelebrity.co.uk/ created by Joshua Sofaer. I was able to post it once to this site, but when editing, I was never able to get it to work again. I spent at least 6 hours trying.

I posted comments on J.T.'s library card and Queen of Heart's Queen's Quarters. Both sites are great. I loved librarycard's bead artwork and Queen of Hearts obviously loves Disneyland. I also posted a comment on Readingfool's blog. I found her blog on the yalsa listserv. She writes incredible book reviews. I love to read them and often use it for book orders. This is the first time I have commented on her blog. She is not in this program, but she uses blogger. In the short time I was editing this, I got an e-mail thanking me for my comments. That's great.

Last week on the mid-lit listserv, I posted a thank you to everyone reviewing ARC's for their time to post the reviews. I ended up with 2 brand new ARC books. This is the first time I have ever gotten ARC's and they both contacted me. I am excited to be able to do this.

Week 4 RSS Feeds and Newsreaders#8 and #9

I have spent many hours the past 4 days investigating the difference in the aggregators. I already subscribe to 6 feeds thru RealTime. I tried bloglines and Google Reader, but I really like RealTime better. I think it has a much cleaner look to it. The setup is easy to navigate.
I've used the RealTime with students for social studies a few times. I hope to use it more.
We use it for science current events all the time. The kids really like that. We like Reuters to easy search for an interesting item. RealTime says powered by feedster. I thought feedster was a reader also, still can't figure that out. I like how RealTime has a tickertape at the bottom of my screen.
The best thing I discovered and why it has taken me so long for this activity is that I found Connotea. This site organizes and shares your links to your references.. It can automatically add bibliographic information to your work. It is for scientists and academia, however it is changing to add more fields. Looks interesting enough to spend some time checking it out.

I subscribe to a few library newsreaders, blogs and such. I participate in Calib, Mid-lit, LM_NET and Yalsa. I subscribe to Blueweb'n newsletter and Education World newsletter. I love all of these and get such good information from all of them. Another fabulous resource is Infosearcher. It is a paid subscription newsletter put out by Pam Berger. I will never let this subscription expire. I attend her conferences when she is in our area. She is inspiring to everyone in the audience.

I am really dreading this week at school. All the library
books checked out (3,500) are due back in. Next week all
the textbooks are due back in (over 6,000). UCKKKK

But wait, Lifelong Learning Habit #3, View Problems as a
Challenge, comes in to play. It will really be a stretch for me to say how lucky I am to get my exercise while I work.

This weekend has really proved a challenge to me. Flickr
has not been easy. I still have much to learn. I haven't
even begun Flickr masher. That's next.
I didn't catch on to flickr as fast as I had hoped, so I spent alot of time here.

It was really easy. It disappeared once, so I am adding it again.

Week 1 and 2 Create Blog and Add Avatar

Finally, I am going to start this project. I forgot my google password, so I had to ask google for help. Right off the bat, I will have to use habit #3, View Problems as Challenges. Google mailed the passwordto my school e-mail account. Wouldn't you know the district server has been down all weekend so I am unable to access my account. I decided to practice Habit 7 1/2, Play- Be Curious. I played. I had a great time practicing this habit. I have it down pat. Wow, two of the
7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners used and I have only just begun.

I decided it would be better to use my home e-mail account because this is where I will be working on this project. Who has time to type a complete sentence at work?

I have always considered myself a lifelong learner. Everything I do seems to be beyond me. I am always trying to figure out the next new thing.

The most challenging habit for me will be #6, Use Technology to Your Advantage. Anyone who could see my computer desktop and word files would understand why. I am certain that I have the best of the best wesites for every subject. I just can't locate them when I need them.
